A federal judge has temporarily halted the Department of Homeland Security’s effort to obtain records tied to roughly 17 million commercial driver’s license holders, granting an administrative stay while a coalition of states challenges the request in court. The order issued on Friday by the U. S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia prevents the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) from producing records sought through a DHS administrative subpoena until the court rules on a motion to quash the request. The ruling marks the latest development in a legal battle that could have significant implications for commercial drivers, state licensing agencies and federal transportation enforcement efforts.
