Hapag-Lloyd introduces US$1,350 low water surcharge for Manaus

Hapag-Lloyd will introduce a Low Water Surcharge (LWS) for container shipments to and from Manaus, Brazil, as water levels continue to decline in the Amazon region. The surcharge will take effect for cargo with a tariffing date on or after 12 September 2026. Hapag-Lloyd said the measure follows expectations of a potentially severe dry season in the Western Amazon. US$1,350 per container The Low Water Surcharge will be set at: US$1,350 per container Applicable to all container types Applies to cargo moving to and from the Port of Manaus Effective from 12 September 2026 based on the tariffing date According to Hapag-Lloyd, the surcharge is intended to cover additional costs and operational challenges associated with navigating the Amazonas River during periods of low water. Amazon water levels continue to fall Hapag-Lloyd has been monitoring water levels across the Amazon region as the 2026 dry season develops.
