Everllence and Hudong-Zhonghua agreed for LNG carrier propulsion
Everllence has signed an Engineering Design Agreement with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, the major Shanghai-based Chinese state-owned shipbuilder, for the development of a 180,000 cubic-metre class LNG carrier featuring Everllence’s DFE+ dual-fuel electric-plus propulsion system. The agreement was signed on June 5, 2026, building on a prior collaboration between the two companies that delivered 10 conventional dual-fuel diesel electric LNG carriers. The partnership is designed to develop a more environmentally friendly and efficient propulsion solution for LNG shipping in response to increasingly stringent IMO Carbon Intensity Indicator emission requirements and the broader industry imperative to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The hybrid-electric propulsion approach is intended to deliver efficiency improvements beyond those achievable through incremental advances by individual technology providers, requiring close collaboration between shipyard and engine manufacturer. Song Wei, Chief Technical Engineer of Hudong-Zhonghua, described decarbonisation as an obvious development trend in shipping and highlighted the challenges facing ship owners in meeting 205
